Summer 2022 – Finally, unstuck and planning for reopening activities in October

Since I last wrote (in February), we had a few stressful months trying to navigate our way out a midst a fallout with the building company and finding some kind of alternative to teaching in our Old Stable. I kept quiet mainly because I couldn’t say anything for sure… But here we are, at last! After two years of Covid and a never ending saga with a building company, we finally seem to see the end of it!
Updates in a nutshell:

• ‘Eco-bonus’ building project: After nearly a year in which our building company put obstacles and refused to continue the ill started work we hired a lawyer in January, and after a string of letters between lawyers and stressful moments of uncertainty we finally got the faulty company off our grounds and secured a new one to complete the building project “Eco-bonus” by September. The loan procedure with the bank including the application to the governmental initiative went through and got accepted so we are relieved that it’s a home run from now on.
• Teaching activities: Since February until mid June I’ve been teaching as an external English teacher in the military officers school in Modena: that was a very interesting experience which as well as evoking flashbacks to my time in military, got me to understand better young Italians and their motivation to join the armed forces in general. This episode deserves a blog post on its own right.
• Barn renovation (DIY): As a result of the building saga and the stressful moments involved, we decided to direct our frustration and anxiety towards a positive goal: renovating the barn to allow for our new teaching space as well as a rehearsal room on our own! (we just stopped trusting anyone and thought that whatever mistakes we do, or troubles we run through in the DIY process, it’ll still be easier and less stressful than working with ‘professionals’). All through bio building (slip straw), we learnt a heap of new techniques and got friends to help us. We are nearly done! (project includes: closing the entrance with used double glazed doors, electric wiring of sockets and lights, insulation and painting)
• Bees : though suffered from a slow start (two hives didn’t survive the winter), we managed to recover the lost families and now, steadily, despite the heat waves, we are running strong with all four hives.
• Chickens: After a few unsuccessful trials to get some chicks to hatch, we finally managed with one of our hens (I tie it to the liberation process from the infamous building company). However, rats have managed to have a go at two of the chicks and we are remaining with only one chick and mother that have been now transferred to the old stable.
• Prospective: we are working to complete both Eco-bonus project and our own DIY barn renovation by end of September to allow a new start for courses in October. Recruitment starts now!

Dall’ultima volta che ho scritto (a febbraio), abbiamo trascorso alcuni mesi stressanti cercando di uscire da una ricaduta con l’impresa edile e trovando una sorta di alternativa all’insegnamento nella nostra Old Stable. Ho taciuto soprattutto perché non potevo dire nulla di sicuro… Ma eccoci finalmente! Dopo due anni di Covid e una saga senza fine con un’impresa edile, sembra finalmente di vederne la fine!
Aggiornamenti in poche parole:

• Progetto edilizio ‘Eco-bonus’: Dopo quasi un anno in cui la nostra impresa edile ha messo ostacoli e si è rifiutata di continuare i lavori mal iniziati abbiamo assunto un avvocato a gennaio, e dopo una serie di lettere tra avvocati e momenti di stressante incertezza abbiamo finalmente ottenuto l’azienda difettosa si è allontanata dai nostri terreni e ne ha assicurata una nuova per completare il progetto edilizio “Eco-bonus” entro settembre. La procedura di prestito con la banca, inclusa la richiesta di iniziativa governativa, è andata a buon fine ed è stata accettata, quindi siamo sollevati dal fatto che d’ora in poi sia un fuoricampo.
• Attività didattiche: Da febbraio a metà giugno insegno come insegnante esterno di inglese nella scuola per ufficiali militari di Modena: è stata un’esperienza molto interessante che oltre a evocare flashback del mio periodo militare, mi ha fatto capire meglio i giovani Gli italiani e la loro motivazione ad entrare nelle forze armate in generale. Questo episodio merita un post sul blog a sé stante.
• Ristrutturazione del fienile (fai da te): a seguito della saga edilizia e dei momenti stressanti coinvolti, abbiamo deciso di dirigere la nostra frustrazione e ansia verso un obiettivo positivo: rinnovare il fienile per consentire il nostro nuovo spazio di insegnamento e una sala prove sul nostro possedere! (abbiamo semplicemente smesso di fidarci di nessuno e abbiamo pensato che qualunque errore commettiamo o problemi che incontriamo nel processo fai-da-te, sarà comunque più facile e meno stressante che lavorare con i “professionisti”). Durante tutta la bioedilizia (cannuccia), abbiamo imparato un sacco di nuove tecniche e abbiamo trovato amici che ci aiutassero. Abbiamo quasi finito! (il progetto prevede: chiusura dell’ingresso con doppi vetri usati, cablaggio elettrico di prese e luci, coibentazione e tinteggiatura)
• Api: pur subendo una partenza lenta (due alveari non sono sopravvissuti all’inverno), siamo riusciti a recuperare le famiglie perdute e ora, costantemente, nonostante le ondate di caldo, stiamo correndo forte con tutti e quattro gli alveari.
• Le nostre galline: Dopo alcune prove infruttuose per far schiudere dei pulcini, siamo finalmente riusciti con una delle nostre galline (lo lego al processo di liberazione dalla famigerata impresa edile). Tuttavia, i topi sono riusciti a provare due dei pulcini e noi rimaniamo con un solo pulcino e una madre che ora sono stati trasferiti nella vecchia stalla.
• Prospettiva: stiamo lavorando per completare sia il progetto Eco-bonus che la ristrutturazione del nostro fienile fai-da-te entro la fine di settembre per consentire un nuovo inizio ai corsi di ottobre. Il reclutamento inizia ora!
